CamelBak, Journey to the Backcountry
Journey to the Backcountry is a CamelBak backcountry ski film profiling Mammoth Lakes–based skier Nate Greenberg and his deep connection to the Eastern Sierra. Created as a documentary-style outdoor brand film, the piece prioritizes authenticity over product, focusing on exploration, preparation, and respect for place.
Following a successful first collaboration, CamelBak invited us back to tell a quieter story, one grounded in human-powered movement and lived experience. Together, we ventured into remote backcountry terrain to create an observational portrait of a skier who knows the mountains intimately and moves through them with intention.
This project reflects our broader approach to outdoor and action sports filmmaking: real athletes, real conditions, and story-first production.
A Day Shaped by Preparation and Place
The film unfolds as a day in the life of Nate and his close-knit group of friends. It begins with researching conditions and preparing gear before transitioning into unmanned terrain. From there, the group skins uphill, skis untouched lines, and winds down together after long days in the mountains.
Rather than structuring the film around dramatic spectacle, we focused on process. Backcountry skiing is defined by preparation: studying snowpack, assessing avalanche risk, packing thoughtfully, and moving deliberately. Each decision matters.
Shot over three days across remote locations in the Eastern Sierra, the visuals emphasize patience and rhythm. We captured natural transitions: early morning light, long ascents, quiet conversations, and the shared satisfaction that comes at the end of a demanding day in the mountains.
By grounding the narrative in lived experience, the film resonates with audiences who understand that the reward of backcountry skiing lies not only in the descent, but in everything that leads up to it.
Why Outdoor Brands Choose Documentary-Style Storytelling
For outdoor brands like CamelBak, authenticity is essential. Today’s outdoor audience quickly recognizes traditional advertising. What resonates instead is alignment, shared values between brand and athlete.
This documentary was designed to reflect those values:
-
Exploration over spectacle
-
Responsibility over risk
-
Community over individual heroics
-
Preparation over impulsivity
Rather than spotlighting product features, CamelBak’s presence remains intentionally understated. The brand supports the athlete’s experience without interrupting it. That subtle integration reinforces credibility and trust, key pillars in outdoor brand storytelling.
This values-driven approach defines much of our documentary and long-form work with outdoor and action sports companies.
Filming in Mammoth Lakes and the Eastern Sierra
Producing a backcountry ski film in the Eastern Sierra requires careful logistical planning and a lightweight production approach. Accessing remote terrain means early starts, avalanche awareness, and travel by skin track rather than snowmobile or lift access.
Our crew operated with a minimal footprint so we could move alongside the athletes without disrupting the natural rhythm of the day. Every piece of gear had to justify its weight. Cinematography had to balance beauty with mobility.
The result is a Mammoth Lakes backcountry skiing video grounded in real terrain, real light, and real effort. Wide alpine vistas contrast with tight, intimate moments of preparation and reflection. The Sierra Nevada becomes more than a backdrop, it functions as a character within the story.
Filming in these conditions reinforces our production philosophy: meet the athlete where they are and let the environment shape the narrative.
Letting the Story Lead
The story is told entirely through Nate’s voice. His reflections explore what draws him to backcountry skiing, the responsibility that comes with unpatrolled terrain, and the deeper rewards of choosing the trail less traveled.
By centering the film around personal voice rather than scripted messaging, we created a ski athlete profile film that feels lived-in and genuine. The pacing mirrors the cadence of ski touring itself: deliberate, immersive, and patient.
This approach allows the audience to experience the mountains alongside the athlete rather than simply observing from a distance.
Production Approach
For Journey to the Backcountry, Lightbox Filmworks handled:
-
Creative concept refinement
-
Athlete collaboration and interview direction
-
Location scouting in the Eastern Sierra
-
Documentary-style cinematography
-
Voiceover recording
-
Post-production editing and sound design
Our focus was on maintaining narrative integrity while delivering a cinematic finish suitable for brand distribution. The edit emphasizes natural sound design and restrained pacing, reinforcing the human-powered nature of the story.
This project reflects our broader work in outdoor brand documentary production, where the goal is not to manufacture moments but to capture them as they unfold.
A Values-Driven Outdoor Brand Film
Ultimately, Journey to the Backcountry is grounded in real experience and real place. It ties together a love of nature, a love of exploration, and the importance of community in the mountains.
For CamelBak, the film reinforces alignment with athletes who prioritize preparation and responsibility. For audiences, it offers an honest look at why backcountry skiing continues to draw people into remote terrain.
And for us, it represents the kind of storytelling we’re drawn to: documentary-driven films that elevate brand identity through lived experience rather than overt messaging.
Another outdoor brand project we loved working on with a similar story-first approach was with Mammoth Lakes–based apparel company Ridge Merino. While that film leans more commercial in structure, it remains grounded in real people, real terrain, and the rhythms of life in the Eastern Sierra. Like Journey to the Backcountry, the focus was less about product features and more about values: community, environment, and the lived experience behind the brand.
Journey to the Backcountry is part of our broader Documentary & Long-Form work with outdoor and action sports brands, including athlete profiles, expedition films, and values-led brand storytelling.
