Costa Del Mar, The Untangled Collection

A connection between product and purpose runs through this Costa Del Mar brand film, created for The Untangled Collection. Set against the waters it aims to protect, the campaign centers on a simple idea: the materials we choose matter. Small decisions can create meaningful change.

Through cinematic storytelling, the film brings Costa’s commitment to ocean conservation into clear focus. As a result, the story feels grounded and intentional. Rather than relying on claims alone, it shows how innovation and responsibility work together in practice.

The Challenge

Costa set out to tell the story of The Untangled Collection in a way that felt credible and restrained. While the sunglasses deliver high performance on the water, their deeper value lies in how they are made.

Each pair uses NetPlus material created from recycled fishing nets collected from coastal communities. However, explaining that system clearly presented a challenge. The story needed to avoid technical overload while still honoring the process.

At the same time, the campaign had to connect conservation, manufacturing, and performance without reducing the message to a marketing claim.

The Approach

Instead of leading with performance alone, the campaign centers on responsibility. Sustainability appears as something active and observable, not abstract.

From there, the film unfolds as a visual exploration of impact. It moves between ocean environments, working hands, and tools designed for life on the water. Throughout, the pacing remains deliberate. This allows the message to settle without urgency or spectacle.

In turn, the story reflects Costa’s long-standing relationship with the ocean and the people who depend on it. By tracing the journey of discarded fishing nets into high-performance eyewear, the film connects innovation directly to environmental stewardship.

Production & Collaboration

Production took place across multiple locations with both video and photography teams on site. In total, the crew numbered approximately eight people.

First, filming began at Bureo headquarters in Oxnard, California. There, the team captured a key interview and manufacturing b-roll documenting how fishing nets are collected and processed into NetPlus material.

Next, production moved to Oakley headquarters in Foothill Ranch, California. This shoot focused on Costa, capturing a primary interview alongside product testing and research-and-development footage inside active facilities.

Finally, an additional shoot day captured product assets in studio and on location along the Washington coast. To complete the story, archival video and photography were integrated where needed, allowing the film to move fluidly across place and process.

Deliverables

  • Primary hero brand film anchoring the campaign

  • Two supporting cutdowns (30-second and 15-second) for digital distribution

  • Four 6-second bumper videos amplifying key conservation messages

  • Photography assets supporting campaign rollout and brand storytelling

The Outcome

Ultimately, the campaign reinforces the idea that purpose and performance can coexist. Built for life on the water and driven by conservation, The Untangled Collection reflects Costa’s belief that protecting the ocean starts with thoughtful choices.

Rather than elevating volume or spectacle, the work favors clarity and restraint. Not all change is loud. Still, when it is rooted in real action, it can be lasting.
