Oregon Bureau of Labor & Industries, Apprenticeship Training Division
A year ago, the Oregon Bureau of Labor & Industries (BOLI) expanded their veteran services within their apprenticeship training division.
Most veterans are unaware these services even exist, but what it’s ultimately offering is a pathway to a career…a helping hand where it’s so desperately needed. They’re uniquely positioned to provide this support through the talents of their team, some of whom are veterans themselves (Lisa Ransom and Aaron Unpingco), which creates an opportunity for connection and understanding on a level far-and-above the typical human-to-business transaction. BOLI’s focus is human-to-human, providing grounded, connective conversations and letting you know they care and they’re here to help you transition into a career you truly care about, even providing insight into how apprenticeships aren’t all too dissimilar from your time in the service! There really is no better fit.
Currently, they offer apprenticeships in building and construction, medical, manufacturing, and IT, and once you finish your apprenticeship, you’re able to take your credentials anywhere in the country. On a local level, they’re working directly with employers to respond to the needs of the workforce in Oregon, so the programs they’re offering are always directly related to the jobs that are available. This is a really important decision for veterans. They already chose one career, and now it’s BOLI’s job to help them make an informed decision about the next phase of their life.
For too long, apprenticeships have been stigmatized as a second rate option, but we came in to help change that perception, and BOLI wants to do the same. They’re ready to help you find not only a job, but a lifelong career. If you’re a veteran looking to make that next step, there really is no better place to help you do that.
